Chili Line / Chama Tour

On Friday Nov 21 we are going to have a tour drive of the Chili Line and Chama.  Everyone is invited. This will be a caravan of cars.  We have lined up a few drivers and minivans but may need more.  The caravan will leave The Best Western in Santa Fe at 8:00 AM. There is a continental breakfast at the motel starting at 6: AM.

We will follow as much of the grade as possible the entire trip.  The group will drive downtown passing the Station in Santa Fe now serving as Tomasitas restaurant. We will then proceed to Otowi crossing with a short stop to take a picture of the remains of the bridge. The somewhat preserved station of Embudo is the next stop.  We have obtained permission to walk around the grounds and look at the station, water tank and outbuildings that have survived.  The water tank in Tres Piedres will be the next photo stop before proceeding to Antonito.  We are working on access to the shop there which contains the K-27 #463.  This is the North yards of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR and we will be able to photograph a variety of equipment and locos.  There is a nice café here for lunch.

The second leg of our trip will follow the C&TS with stops at Los Pinos and Cumbres on the way to Chama.  Bob and Sylvia at The Trackside Emporium are going to open up especially for us and has helped by getting us access to the Chama shops and engine house. We will have as much time as daylight permits to wander the yard with its extensive collection of equipment and structures.  We will then return to Santa Fe, expecting to return around 6:30 PM.

It will be a long day, but should be fun.  Expect it to be cold in Chama, so please be prepared. Bring solid shoes for walking in the yards can be hazardous.

NOTE:  Transportation is not provided but looking for all with minivans to carpool.
