Tours
This page will take you to maps and directions for the tours of the Chili Line.
First, a little information about the maps. The maps are produced from Microsoft’s Virtual Earth (now Bing Maps). As such you can use your mouse to move around on the map and zoom in and out. Also, you can use the controls located in the upper left corner of each map. The Chili Line route is in red and the road route is in blue. Marks for the Chili Line route are done in red and Marks for the road route done in blue.
Second, we would like to thank Dave Dye for giving us permission to use his hard work on the code that does the route of the Chili Line. Dave has a very informative web site at: DAVE'S RIO GRANDE NARROW GAUGE SITE.
Notes on Visting the Chili Line:
There are several things that a visitor needs to keep in mind when visiting the area. First, some of the areas are either on Native American Reservations or private land or Bureau of Land Management land or National Forest. The Otowi bridge site is on the San Ildefonso Indian Reservation and you must get permission to go to the bridge site. You can see allot from the road and so long as you do not leave road or the shoulder you are ok. You may have a Tribal Police Officer stop and ask what you are doing, please be courteous. Embudo is on private land and you must ask for permission to look around. These are only several examples so please check where you are going to.
Another thing to watch out for is the weather. In the summer it can get very hot so carry water with you on the trip. Also, the area does have rattle snakes and precaution should be taken and be on a look out for them. Some of the plants have thorns (wearing shorts is not a good idea). In the fall and spring we can get snow. I’ve driven to Tres Piedras in the first week of October and get caught in a snow storm that dumped three feet of snow in a few hours. So be sure to have good warm clothing handy when traveling in the fall or spring. It goes without saying that you must have warm clothing for our winters.
Lastly, the area is remote and your cell phone might not work in some areas.
